Top 9 On Instagram

Picture

‘Recently I have been participating in an Insta challenge, I have noticed that there are a lot of discussions based around the Top 9 Posts and how they are actually generated. Estelle Keeber of MIBA brought this to my attention in one of her lives last week!
‘Top 9’ Before the Epidemic
Up until recently it was a widely know thing that the top 9 were generated based on our comments, likes and views of any given image. So if we are all looking at an image there it appears, you have to imagine ‘Top 9’ as whats trending.  But recently Instagram has decided that it is going to change everything! Which you probably hadn’t noticed…that is because Instagram is now providing you with a very personal experience to bring you the ‘Top 9’ to make our egotistical selves even more egotistic and probably a ploy to get us even more hooked on Insta!!

THE EPIDEMIC!!
The new way, Instagram takes all of the things that you personally are looking at, commenting on and liking and makes a little store of the colours in the images, keywords and hashtags used in the post and attaches each one of these words on post it notes (that are non existent) and stores them for us! Instagram does this for every single image that you maximise, comment on or like, even when you have no idea!
The egotistical part… Instagram then uses all of the words from your post it notes to generate a personal ‘Top 9’ especially for you!!! Based on only the things that you like to see….Yes Instagram’s techniques (algorithms) are that smart! How this will affect us

  • its a personal experience….its all about you!
  • Its no longer going to be filled with things you would not want to see
  • It picks the same colours that your eyes pick on images everyday
  • Instagram will never seem boring to you again (unless of course you already look at boring images)
  • It makes it a lot harder to get onto the Explore page which is a low blow for organisations trying to grow Organic Followers!
